Rebuilding a CDR collection.

Oh no, not another favourite bootleg thread!

Well, sort of, but mostly looking for opinions, any help that's offered from experience of favourite discs and other's thoughts if they found themselves in the same disc-less situation.

So, earlier in the year, I had my entire boot collection collected and thrown away. Didn't give it much thought, it all just went with everything else when I had a house cleared. I now own the square root of knack all CDR's and literally hundreds of original boots are probably helping to fill a landfill site somewhere in the NW.

I'm aware of pretty much everything that's considered a classic must-have boot and everything pre '87, I'm just looking for help with which shows to get again from 87 onwards. Simply, I want no more than 3 shows per year (exceptional years, a couple more) to represent the year's touring activities.

So, what are people's thoughts on 1987?
Which shows, if any, do you play the most?
If you lost everything from 87 you own, what would you get again?
~By the way, i don't need any recommendation from the Dead mini tour~

I've only one show that immediately comes to mind, and that's the boot 'Final night and more', so, two more shows to pick, what would you plump for?

P.S. This isn't a request for shows to be put in the mail for me, i can easily request B&P's, Bittorrent etc. at a later date.

1998 is a hard one, because there are a lot of extraordinary shows and recordings. Here are my choices:

"Madison Square Garden," Madison Square Garden Theater, New York, NY, January 21, 1998 (Crystal Cat)

January 30, 1998 – C.W. Post Coll., Brookville, New York (Clete & Fed) (LB-5188)

"A Knife, A Fork, A Bottle, A Cork," Savage Hall, Toledo, Ohio, February 15, 1998 (Junkyard Angel)

February 20, 1998 – Viking Hall, Bristol, Tennessee [devastating Sweet Marie]

March 30, 1998 – Miami Beach, Florida (Schubert rem.) (LB-3486)

"Splendor in the Gorge," Gorge Amphit., George, Washington, May 16, 1998 (fan cdr, great bonus tracks)

May 21, 1998, Pauley Pavilion, Los Angeles, California [Restless Farewell, and officially released Make You Feel My Love]

June 17, 1998 – Vorst Nationaal, Brussels, Belgium (Zimmy 21) (LB-4319) [extraordinary recording!, with great Mama You Been On My Mind; a wonderful License To Kill (first since Nov. 3, 1995) and a great Tears of Rage and Forever Young]

"Down Under the Lounge," The Lounge, Melbourne, Australia, August 19, 1998 (Dandelion)

September 26, 1998 – Shoreline Amphit., Mountain View, California (LB-2489)

November 5, 1998 – Cole Field House, College Park, MD (Bobby Bourbon) (LB-5149) [awesome pairing of Blind Willie McTell and Every Grain Of Sand mid-show]

I could easily add another five, especially from that June-July Europe run which I shorted here because it's so well known.

For 2002, after the Europe tour there is (1) the August tour starting in the northeast and ending in the mountain west and (2) the fall tour starting in the northwest and ending on the east coast. I'd nominate:

August 4, 2002 – Augusta, Maine [Excellent sound and setlist, including Hummingbird, The Man in Me, If You See Her Say Hello, Tombstone Blues, Tears of Rage, and Never Gonna’ Be the Same Again. If You See Her is destroyed by early iteration of upsinging, but the best version of Floater I’ve ever heard is just nailed a few songs later]

September 1, 2002 – Aspen, Colorado [Last Bob-on-guitar show. Last ever Duncan and Brady; last ever This World Can’t Stand Long; last ever Subterranean Homesick Blues (except one in 2003 with Grateful Dead); one of only 7 Quinn the Eskimo]

November 9, 2002 – Elmira, New York (LB-2902)

November 22, 2002 - Fairfax, Virginia [Charlie's last show; smoking Summer Days, anthemic Blowin']

Mark asked:

"What's the best show of 2006?"

Year 2006 is divided into before Modern Times and after Modern Times. In the before Modern Times category, I strongly believe that Reading, Pennsylvania, August 23, is the best. Stupendous show, one surprise after another. Opens with Cat’s in the Well for first time in over a year after a long run of Maggie’s openers. Includes You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere (first since Nov. 6, 2005, Erfurt, GE), Not Dark Yet (first since July 30, 2005, Goldendale, WA), Tangled Up In Blue (first since Oct. 29, 2005, Oberhausen, GE); Lenny Bruce (first since April 30, 3005, New York Beacon). Closed with Rainy Day Women not Watchtower, first show without Watchtower in 2006.

After Modern Times I'll leave to others, though I like Fairfax and New York.

when freddy joined the band, he jumped out front and started rocking and duck walking and kicking up a storm, and he wasn't afraid to wail on one sweet note for a while, or to repeat a phrase over and over for effect.
i realize that bob doesn't want that from his band right now, so in large part i blame bob for the perpetual timidity that is denny freeman.

denny's notes are just too thin and meek.
and when he tries that 4-finger pull-off thing, he flubs it a good percentage of the time.
he needs a fatter sound and bigger pair of balls.
and in his weak little guitar solos, he might occasionally try playing more than one note at a time.

He is laid back but magnificent at the same time. See my Stockholm video and you will see yet on the first night of 2007 (well, second...) The gist of Honest With Me and the likes are all laying on his and Recile's shoulder. I loved Larry Campbell and Sexton too not to talk about Freddy but thats the amazing listening to Bob that he teaches us to learn to accept and discover other mates as well with their own distinctive features. So to cut it short, those two words would be "Stu" and "Kimball" :-D

OK, Mark, for 1990 and 1991 (not counting the Feb 1990 shows)

1990 -- I'm enamoured of

"Rooftop Serenade & Can You Please Tell Me What I’m Doing Here," West Berlin, W. Germany, July 5, 1990 (BD) [excellent versions of I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (early countrified version), Shelter From The Storm, Masters of War (with weird Bobtalk – "Hitler wasn’t really German at all"), Gotta Serve Somebody, Song To Woody and Don't Think Twice]

July 9, 1990 – Montreux, Switzerland (Legendary Taper D) (LB-4086) [very special version of Across The Borderline, with Flaco Jimenez from Ry Cooder’s band playing accordion]

September 1, 1990 – Lampe, Missouri (PL) (LB-4362)

For late 1991 -- try these

"Nice to Be Up Here in Texas," Austin, Texas October 25, 1991 (Bob T. Guevara rem.) (LB-5241) [excellent performance, sound is not the best]

"Live At Brand Theater 1991," Tulsa, Oklahoma, October 30, 1991 (SBD) (Shamrock)

November 4, 1991 – Evanston, Illinois (MJS) [great Golden Vanity, very nice cover of Answer Me, excellent Trail of the Buffalo]

Hope this helps.
