Travelling Wilburys re-issue - WTF?!?
Comparison to originals
June 11, 2007 09:00PM

Current mood:
What has happened to Keltner's drums?!? The snap on 'congratulations' that drove the song along is gone...now it's more of a dull thud. 'Tweeter...' sounds like a click-track.
What's with the vocal overdubs on 'Like A Ship'? The boot just had Dylan's vocal and some background vocals, but now it's mixed very differently with extra vocals by Harrison (I think).
Some of the '80s' sounding production has been pushed back in the mix as well, compared to the original issues. I would imagine they thought this was a good idea, but it's also made the overall sound less bright and the mix muddier.

Nice packaging and I'm glad they did it, but the original cd issues sound better to me.

I was thinking about getting it, but I have the older cds, so... is this worth for the extras alone, considering the mix you where talking about?

Current mood:
I suppose it's personal, the DVD and packaging is nice, and it's louder than the old cds, but the mix is certainly different in places.

Havn't listened carefully, first album sounds pretty good on good equipment. Additional vocals/mixes were to be expected. Only got them for DVD, packaging and of course to keep collection complete. Deluxe presentation is very nice, standard one is crap.

Maybe this article will clarify things:
Quote:
Like a Ship, featuring Harrison and Dylan, respectively, on lead vocals, are previously unreleased outtakes from Vol. 3. "They were completed, except for some harmonies, so I asked George's son, Dhani, to do his father's parts, which was nice," Lynne says.

Like most music, at least imo, the 'finished' product is bound to be overproduced. Especially when someone like Jeff Lynne is doing it. The other Wilburys, being more straight rock oriented, probably kept the original recordings from being overcooked.

I'm looking forward to it. I'm not a big Wilburys fan, so I don't have much boot stuff beyond a video or two, so I don't think I'll be disappointed. And naturally, I am looking forward to the packaging.

Was there anything truly new, that you hadn't seen/heard before?

Am I missing a few Wilburys somewhere? since when has Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Roy Orbison been " straight rock oriented" have I missed Bobs Black Sabbath period

I meant they'd go into the studio, record a song straight out, and be done with it.
Jeff Lynne is more the type to labor over something. Add and remove tracks, try every combination he can think of, buff and polish, etc. For the rest of them, that approch becomes a chore, for Jeff it's very rewarding. George's work was similarly tinkered with, but to a far lesser degree. Personally, I've never been overly fond of bands like ELO just for that reason. I like things a little looser. Remember I said I wasn't a big Wilburys fan? Same deal. On one hand they seemed to be having a lot of fun, but the finished songs were a bit too overdone and Top 40ish for my taste.
I was itinerent during the late 80s, pretty much lving out of my car, and music was just a blip on my radar during those years anyway.
This release is a chance for me to experience the Wilburys in a cohesive way, instead of little bits and pieces. Maybe I'll warm to them a bit more. smiling smiley

As for how things sound in general:
I find that different recordings sound radically different when listening through different devices. Also my media center receivers have a multitude of output settings for video, tv, audio, surround, 'live', active eq, etc. Remember when the choice was Dolby on/off?

I also finally found a pair of earphones that fit my ears, and they've utterly spoiled me. V-Moda Vibe

No Dumbo*, I have little tiny petite feminine ears. Nothing I tried was small enough to fit and stay in before the Vibes.

I for one am over the moon that the Wilburys stuff has been re-released. Its never stopped emanating from my speakers since it arrived yesterday. Its as much of a breath of fresh air today as it was in '88.

Every shop I went into yesterday had it playing. Wilbury fever babeh! (thumbsup)

I watched the DVD last night and really enjoyed it - they were 5 guys having fun, that is obvious (only Bob seemed quieter than the rest - bless him!) - I've not listened to the tracks yet - I just assumed they would be similar to the original (only slightly better ? )

I love listening to the Wilbury's on a car journey - happy and fun they sound grinning smiley

:dylan: - George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison & Jeff Lynn - forever

Is the 'deluxe' edition the same one I paid £14.99 for from Play.com? Or is there a really deluxe version out there?

The non-deluxe is pretty deluxe, I'd say. But there's an even more deluxe version, apprently. I have the "regular" (i.e pretty deluxe) version, again from Play for £14.99.

There is no comparison, cheap one is flimsy crap cardboard with little cheap booklet. Deluxe is in linen covered board case with hardback book, envelope of pics etc and discs are in stiff card foldout.

Then I've got the deluxe version...for £14.99. Badlands deliver the bargains to the discerning collector once again.

Not wanting to derail the thread any further than necessary, but what?

I'm not disagreeing with you. I didnt realise you had stated anything to disagree with. I was merely offering a solution to your ELO CD buying needs.

I'm saddened that you think I am 'jumping all over you' I never realised you were so fragile. I certainly never intended it to come across like that. Although I must say I am delighted to have someone as high and mighty as yourself telling me my reasons for posting as it saves me the hassle of worrying about it myself.

Come on weasel, if you didn't like it from the off why bother weighing in about it in first place.

So you paid £ 14.99 from Play.com but give the thanks to Badlands, I don't quite understand that ?

Thanks for that link, a great read - had to smile at this bit:

"The way Harrison's voice here blends effortlessly with those of Orbison, Petty, Lynne — and even Dylan"

Im not sure why people have a problem with Jeff Lynne if you watch the dvd you will see that most of the production was done at George's studio in england by George and Jeff also George explains why the record sounds like it does it was a pretty basic set up with them sitting around with guitars , you should forget prejudices against one member of the Wilburys and listen to it, its very good.

It's just nice to know I'm not alone about Lynne. Mike's first post wondered why the additional songs sounded like they did - it's because Lynne didn't have anyone else there to rein him in.

There must be two versions of the dvd and the cd because on the one Ive watched and listened to few times George Harrison and Jeff Lynne produced The Wilburys.

I'm not a Jeff "all my songs sound the same" Lynne fan and his production on these albums does come across as a bit samey. I do like these cds though, but they won't get played as much as Bob does. Nothing gets played as much as Bob does!
